You would hardly expect a bald
baby to inspire a line of fashion accessories, particularly a
collection of hair bows.
But Andrea Chafetz, the
mother of almost-bald 6-month-old Maria, says she started her
bow business dreaming of her child in her long locks. So far,
lots of bows and very few locks.
No
matter, Andrea's Beau, as she
calls them, come in a wonderful range of fabrics and
are being snapped up at boutiques throughout the
Washington area. They
range from teensy-weensy bows for babies who have more
hair than Maria, to huge Chanel-size bows, mostly
with clips to wear in
the hair, but some with pins to wear on coat labels,
shirt collars, anywhere.
The
fabrics range from classic and casual houndstooth
checks to upholstery fabrics and many
varieties of black silk and velvet. Some are trimmed
with tassels and one-of-a-kind buttons. She scouts
for fabrics and buttons
in New York; the staple fabrics like black velvet she
finds in Washington.
Chafetz
remembers wearing bows as a child herself. She had
long, dark hair "and my mother was
always doing something on the back of my head " ...like
making a bow.
